It has taken a few months, but I've finally come to the end of my Abyssal Warband for Kings of War Vanguard.
I saved the best for last... The Abyssal Warlock was the last model of the project and looks great. I'm pleased with the results and this thing is a great center piece for the warband.
I hope you have enjoyed following along with me as I worked through this project. Please let me know what you think.
With this project finished, I'll be on to the next project. I have a couple of smaller things I'm going to work on before I start the next big project, but I'm looking forward to some naval work in the very near future.
I'm nearing the end of my Abyssal Warband project. I finished an Abyssal Despoiler for the warband and it is a real beast.
This model counts as "large" so I won't be able to use many in the army, but he looks to be strong enough that his presence will be noticed even if he is alone.
I'm pleased with how this model turned out and look forward to seeing how he works out on the table.
This is my 26th model for the warband and I only have 2 models left to paint.
Any warband could benefit from some cavalry units in their group. I painted some Hellequin models to add some strength to my warband and a Hellequin Blood-masque to serve as a mounted command unit.
The Hellequins are support units, so as with the gargoyles and lukers, I can only use a couple of these in my warband.
I didn't really care for the look of the paint job suggested, so I went with a little different look. I like what I came up with and think these will look nice with the rest of the warband.
These bring my total to 25 models completed for Nick's New Year Painting Challenge. I only have 3 more models to paint for the project.
With the warband nearly finished, I'm looking forward to actually getting a game played soon.
I continue to work on my Kings of War Vanguard Abyssal Warband. This week I put the finishing touches on a group of Succubus Lurker models.
These are another support option for the warband, so I won't be able to include a lot of these, but they will give me a little more variety in army selection.
I like the look of these models, but I'm not 100% happy with how they turned out. They are a little darker than the other models from the warband. I'm not certain why that is, but since these are supposed to be sneaking around in the shadows, I just go with them.
I've now finished 22 models of the warband and have only 6 more to go. Among the remaining models are several characters and a "monster" so they should go quickly and be fun to paint.
I've added some Gargoyle models to my Kings of War Vanguard Abyssal Warband.
These models are support models so I can only include a limited number in my warband. They have fly which will give them a fair amount of mobility on the table. Their regeneration should also help to keep them alive.
These models only have a single pose and I wish they some variation, but I like the way they look.
I've finished some Abyssal Guard models to add to my Abyssal Warband for Kings of War Vanguard.
These are classed as warriors in the game and will add some additional combat strength to the warband. These also have regeneration, so that should help to keep them going in battle even after they have taken some damage.
I wish these models had a little more variety in their poses, but I still like the look of them.
A batch of Succubus models have found their way to my paint table. These are the next models for my Kings of War Vanguard Abyssal Warband.
These models are classed the the warriors in the rules and will give my warband a little more combat prowess. They also have stealth, so hopefully they can get into combat without suffering too much from ranged attacks.
The models look good and I like the variety of weapon combinations on these models.
I've shown off the models I got from the recent Kings of War Vanguard Kickstarter and now I want to actually paint some of them.
A fellow YouTuber that I watch, IDICBeer 40K, has a painting challenge going on that I will use to keep me motivated on this project. I don't really have a deadline to finish, but I plan to work on the models from the Abyssal Warband until I get them all painted. I might take a week or two for other projects, but I'll keep plugging away at these until they are finished.
First up for this project are the Lower Abyssal models. These serve as grunts in this warband and will serve as cheap cannon fodder. They were also test models for the color scheme. I like the look and will use this color scheme throughout the warband.
What do you think of the skin tone? That is kind of the defining attribute of these models.
I've had this Balrog model sitting on my shelf, half finished, for many years. With the release of the new edition of the Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game, I thought it was time to get this painted for use with my Moria Goblins.
I did a little modification by removing the flames from the back of the model. I just used modeling putty to fill the gap and then molded it to match the rest of the lava like surface.
You may not know this, but I really like miniature games. I have a lot of miniatures. I mean A LOT of miniatures. I'm sure that if you are reading this blog, you also have your own collection.
My problem is that even though I already have piles of miniatures, I can't seem to turn down new miniatures. When Mantic Games announced their Kickstarter for Kings of War Vanguard, my ears immediately perked up. I ended up backing at the Giant pledge level which gave me models for 4 factions and an awesome giant model. There were about 100 models all told, plus a variety of terrain. As it turns out, there are some really nice models included.
I still have not played the game, but I am currently working on painting the abyssal war band.
Here is a sneak peek at my paint scheme. Videos on how I paint these models will be posted in the future.
Below are videos showing off the models that came in the Kickstarter.

Terrain is an important aspect of any miniature game. I have a reasonable collection of 28mm models and I'm always looking for things to add to my terrain collection.
Several months ago, Mantic Games had a kickstarter for several Terrain Crates. Each option gave you terrain for a different table top theme. I went in with a friend and we got 3 of the crates.
The first models from these crates to hit my paint table are these stone walls. Linear terrain is great because is breaks up line of sight and movement without taking up a big footprint on the table. It can also provide models a defensive location (maybe with some bonuses) depending on the scenario being played.
These models are well detailed (if a little bent) and will work for a variety of games.
A fellow YouTuber reached out to me and asked if I would paint some models for him and his wife to use on their channel for play through videos of The Pathfinder Adventure Card Games.
They picked out the models and had them shipped to me and I put some paint on the models.
I think they turned out pretty well and I think Kyle and Katrina were also pretty happy with them.

The release of a new edition of the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game by Games Workshop has rekindled my interest in the Lord of the Rings. Okay, I've continued being interested, but it has motivated me to paint some models.
I've had the Fellowship sitting around for years. I had textured the bases and primed the models, but never got any further than that. So, with some motivation, I decided I would put some time in and paint the fellowship.
As usual, I used a simple process to paint them, but am pleased with the results and think they will look great on the table, though probably won't win any painting competitions.
A friend has encouraged our gaming group to start playing Relicblade. This is a fun game that plays on a 2' x 2' board and each player only has a handful of models. So far, it has been a lot of fun.
The game has rules for different terrain types, so I thought I would try my hand at doing a cave board. I thought about doing stalagmites and stalactites, but I was under a deadline and I wasn't sure my skills were up to it. Instead I went with a more basic look. I'm pleased with the results and only have a few more minor details I plan to add.
I'm continuing to add trolls to my collection that will be based up for my Kings of War goblin army.
This time I have a Reaper Bones Troll.
This is a pretty simple paint scheme and the model was painted fairly quickly. If I can find more of these models at my local shop, I will likely be painting a few more for my army.
