Painting Stompas from Games Workshop

Epic Warhammer 40,000 holds a special place in my heart.  The models are fantastic and the scale allows you to play truly "epic" battles.

With the new release of Adeptus Titanicus from Games Workshop, I decided I need to dust off some of my old models and paint a few things up.  The new edition uses a different scale and currently only has Imperial forces (loyal and traitor), but I figure I can use my old models and make some adjustments to use Orks and Eldar as well.  I will probably just use the rules as written and substitute some appropriate Ork (or Eldar) models for the battle.

First up in this project were a few Stompas that could serve as knights in Adeptus Titanicus.  These can also just be used as themselves in my existing Ork army that I can use for Epic 40k, LaserStorm, Future War Commander, Horizon Wars, or any other game I decided to use them with.

Army Showcase - Epic 40K Space Marines

I've always been a fan of Epic Warhammer 40,000.  The models are great and you can play massive games in this scale without losing the ability to maneuver.

I've got a fair amount of models painted for my Space Marine army and after watching an army showcase video on a fellow YouTuber's channel, I thought I would show off my army.

Here you can see my painted Space Marines.  I need to paint more for sure, but this is still a nice looking force (if I do say so myself).

Predators
 Dreadnoughts
 Razorbacks
 Devastator Squads
 Land Raider and Terminators
 Bikes and Attack Bike
 Assault Squads
 Tactical Squads
 Land Speeder
 Hunter
 Rhino
 Vindicator
 Whirlwind
 Commander
Sub-Commander

I will do another army showcase soon showing off my Epic 40K Orks.

Kings of War (6mm) Battle Report - Dwarves vs Goblins - 750 point Kill

I played another game of Kings of War for my 6 x 6 Game Challenge.  I used my Epic 40K models again for this game; Dwarves (Imperial Guard) vs Goblins (Orks/Chaos).

Each army was 750 points and I played on my 2' x 2' game board.  All measurements are in centimeters for these small scale games.

As I was typing up this blog post and putting together the army lists below, I realized that I shorted the Dwarf army by 90 points.  The units in the game only add up to 660 points.  So while the dwarven army lost this game, they did pretty good for being 90 points short.

Dwarf Army - 660 points

Ironwatch Rifle Regiment          155 points
Ironwatch Rifle Regiment          155 points
Ironwatch Rifle Regiment          155 points
Ironbelcher Cannon                    110 points
Ironbelcher Organ Gun               85 points

Goblin Army - 750 points

Troll Bruiser                               125 points
Troll Regiment                           125 points
Troll Regiment                           125 points

Troll Regiment                           125 points
Troll Regiment                           125 points

I messed up on the army list and stats for the dwarf army.  I feel like though they lost, there is an asterisks next to this game.  I will need to replay this and see how it turns out with the correct rules and full points.

Kings of War (6mm) Battle Report - Kingdom of Men vs Goblins - 750 point Dominate

I put together another Kings of War game using my Epic 40k models.  This time, I took my Kingdom of Men (Space Marines) and faced them off against a Goblin army (Orcs/Chaos) composed of only trolls.

Both armies were 750 points so I played on a 2' x 2' board.  I changed all measurements to centimeters.

Kingdom of Men - 750 Points

Standard Bearer on Horse                  65 points

Charioteers Regiment                        115 points

Knight Regiment                               195 points

Goblins - 750 Points

Troll Bruiser                                       125 points
Troll Regiment                                   125 points
Troll Regiment                                   125 points

Troll Regiment                                   125 points
Troll Regiment                                   125 points

I thought the Trolls were done for pretty early, but they held on and managed to end the game in a tie.

I will be trying out more army lists and playing more games in the future.

So many Rhinos, but still not enough.

I've been hard at work on adding some vehicles to my Epic 40k Space Marine force.

Rhinos are a staple of the army and I want to be sure I have enough.  I've painted 19 that can join my existing forces.  (I'm not sure why I did 19 and not 20?)

I've also added a few more Whirlwinds to bolster my artillery division and a couple Hunters to add some AA support.  The Whirlwinds and Hunters were made from a Rhino and some add on parts I got from Shapeways.

I'm pleased with the results and now need to paint up more Space Marine infantry stands to fill all the Rhinos.

I've also got a batch of 12 predators on the paint table.  They have been base coated and washed and are ready for the details to be painted.

New additions to my Epic 40K Space Marines

After using my Space Marines for a GASLIGHT in space game several weeks ago, I realized I need to get more painted up.  Now that I have finished my Goblin army for Kings of War, I'm ready for a new project and I think I'm going to work on expanding the Space Marines.

Some time ago, I ordered some sponsons and turrets from Shapeways that will turn a regular Rhino into a Predator.  So I pulled them out of storage and got to work on some models.  I also want to add some regular Rhinos and a few Whirlwinds.  The whirlwind launchers from also came from Shapeways.

I cut plasticard to make a riser for the turret to sit on so it has clearance over the bolters.

The bottom has been painted and they are ready for the tops to get the base coat..  I use painters tape to keep these from flying away when I paint them.

Not bad progress for a couple hours of work.  I'll post updates as I make more progress.

Epic G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. - AAR #2

++++++  Message Start  ++++++

To Commandar Krause of the Dark Lion Space Marine Chapter

The planetary government of Antia has stopped distribution of agro supplies to the Imperial collectors.  Repeated attempts to reinstate the delivery of these supplies have failed.

Review of available data has shown this planet and its government has significant similarities with others that have come under the influence of Chaos.  There seems to be a 86.42% chance that there is a large chaos cultist influence on the government and its population.  It is important to note that there are significant deviations from previous experiences with the corrupting influence of the dark gods.  At this time, though the deviations cannot be explained so we must assume that you will face forces of the dark gods.

Scans of the planet show a PDF contingent deployed around an agro processing/storage plant.  You will deploy your forces to the south of this plant and then advance on through a wooded area and destroy the opposition.  Any data you collect regarding the corrupting influence should be forwarded on to fleet command for further review and analysis.

Supreme Commander Darius

Quote of the Day:  Adamantium walls and plasteel bulkheads may seem formidable, but an unshakeable faith in the Immortal Emperor of Man can overcome any barriers.

++++++  Message End  ++++++

My group and I played another game of GASLIGHT using my collection of Epic 40k models.

This game took place a few months ago and I failed to write anything up for the game, so I'm afraid, I don't have many details of the game for you.  However, I did take a few pictures so will at least be able to share a bit of eye candy.

The original transmission stated that there was some Chaos taint among the local population, but it turned out that it was actually a Genestealer cult and the invasion of Tyranid forces was already underway.

The Tyranid forces in this game came on kind of piece-meal, so they didn't put up much of a fight for the Marines.  And when the Terminators teleported into the middle of the Guard lines, the game was over pretty quickly.

I need to make some adjustments to stats for our next game, but I think this was a fun game and I look forward to the next engagement.

Hopefully, I will get some more Guard and Tyranid models painted before then as well.

OHW - Bottleneck Scenario

I broke out my Epic 40K models for another game of Neil Thomas's One Hour Wargames.  I used the WWII with the tweaks I talked about in this post:  One-Hour Wargames - Book/Game Review.

I chose to play the Bottleneck scenario (scenario 24) for this game.

I also decided to make use of one set of the random event cards suggested on chapter 22 of the book.  The author suggests each force draw a card each turn but I decided to just have the Marines (my force) draw each turn.  You can see the card for each turn in the photos below.

Again the Eldar and Marines are facing off against each other.  With the Eldar holding the crossroad in the last engagement, the Marines have decided to take a different approach as their forces advance, but they've come to a bottleneck between a forest and a lake.  As they move toward the bottleneck, the Eldar launch an attack and attempt to again halt the Marine advance.

Eldar forces

Marine forces

Deployment

Turn 1
The Marine forces moved onto the board.  The Eldar moved forward and the infantry in the woods fired on the tank to no effect.  Not a lot of action this turn.

Turn 2
The Marine infantry and walker moved forward while the tank opened fire on the infantry in the woods.  The Eldar focused fire on the Marine tank.

Turn 3
The Marines changed their target to the tank as it can deal out a lot of damage.  The Walker still fired on the infantry in the woods as it have a shot on the tank.  The Eldar fired kept pounding on the tank and put some fire on an infantry stand as well with a very good roll.

Turn 4
Both tanks were taken out this turn.

Turn 5
More fire on the damaged infantry and the woods and some fire on the Eldar jump troops take them out of action.  The Eldar move an infantry stand into the woods and take out a Marine infantry stand.

Turn 6
The woods offer good defense to infantry, but these two stands just don't seem to have much of a chance to last through this pounding.

Turn 7
The Marines move up to get everyone into a better firing position while the Eldar continue to defend the forest.

Turn 8
A tough card flip for the Eldar (though it did fit with the situation), plus incoming fire from 4 units.  The poor Eldar took 12 damage in a single turn.

Turn 9
Ammo shortage for the Marines, but it turned out only 1 infantry unit was affected and the remaing forces finished off the Eldar.

Battle Summary
The Eldar were at a disadvantage having jump troops in this scenario, as they can't enter the woods.  But with the random force roll, you get what you get.  In hind sight, I probably should have started the Eldar infantry at the back of the woods and moved the other infantry up into the woods straight away.  It would have given the Eldar a bit more time to shoot instead of moving up to meet the oncoming forces.

As I stated in my previous post, these rules are pretty simple, but they provide a fun game that plays very quickly.  I'm still thinking about letting units move and shoot, as the game is kind of static once people are in range.  While that is probably appropriate for the WWII setting these were originally written for, I think the sci-fi world would have more movement.  I'll probably play a few more games before I make that change.

I've added and finished a bit of terrain for this game.  I painted and drybrushed my board, but will probably add some flock as it is pretty barren.  I cut some felt to define forested areas and water.  Very cheap, but effective.
